Categories & Awards

* Please note that you can only be registered under one of the categories below. For example, you cannot register for Clydesdale and age group at the same time. Participants must select their category when they register. Changes cannot be made to categories once the race starts. It would not be fair to other participants if we let people change groups once the results have been posted and they had a chance to see in which category would result in a higher standing.

Triathlon Categories (1/2 Distance & International):

Elite Category

Professional or Age Group Elite Male and Female racers.  Racers in this category start in the first wave of each event and are only eligible for Overall awards.

Athletes in this category will automatically start in the first wave. This category is designed for participants who are non-competitive and/or believe they unlikely to pass the course cutoff times if placed in later waves. Participants registering for the open category are only eligible for overall awards and are NOT eligible for national championship awards or Team USA Qualification.”

2019 USA Triathlon National Championship Awards

Participants in all National Championship events have the opportunity to qualify for the 2020 ITU Multisport World Championships Festival through the 2019 USA Triathlon Long-Course Triathlon and Aquabike National Championships. It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. Age groups will begin with 17-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 80-84. First place in each age group category for each event will be crowned a 2019 National Champion and receive a National Champion long sleeve shirt. Overall winners will remain in their respective age group for National Championship awards and Team USA qualification. Additionally, athletes must be age 17 as of December 31, 2019 to be eligible for National Championship awards and qualify for the world championships. Athletes must participate in an age group category to be eligible for qualification on Team USA. Clydesdale and Athena athletes are eligible for National Championship awards.

Awards
For the purposes of the USA Triathlon National Championships, athletes who win overall awards are not removed from their age groups. They will also take first place in their respective age group. For example, if John Doe wins first place overall, he will also take the  first place award in his age group. This is for the purposes of Team USA qualification, National Championship age group awards, and USA Triathlon rankings.

Awards are given 3 deep in all categories. Special awards will be given to the Top 3 Overall Males, Top 3 Overall Females, Top Master Male (40+), and Top Master Female (40+).  Those receiving overall and master awards are removed from their age groups, bumping everyone else up in the age group standings. There is no double dipping.  If you qualify for overall, you cannot get another award for masters overall or your age group.

Please stay for the awards ceremony if you are due an award. Unclaimed awards may be mailed if requested within 2 weeks after the event.  You must pay $9 for shipping and handling.  Go to the results of your race and click Mail next to your name to request your award.  There is no other option to get an unclaimed award.
